Award winning Somerset based Packaging and Automation specialists CME Limited have announced their latest export contract win, building upon a number of other significant orders earlier in the year. This new order is for CME developed automation technology that will be supplied into the Cannabis sector in Canada.

The diversity of the different technology solutions being supplied to fulfil recent contracts is testament to the design skills and innovation which CME are able to apply to what can often be unique and challenging applications.

With automation increasingly finding its way into the cannabis sector, under this latest contract CME will provide a robotic pre-roll packaging system to a Canadian customer.

This flexible stand-alone system will be using two SCARA robots to pick up pre-rolled cannabis joints, which are presented in a random fashion on a vibratory feeding system. The products are then transferred and placed in a set configuration and orientation within a tray.

This compact and cost-effective system can process up to 60 pre-rolls per minute with the vision system being used for product identification, position, and orientation, before the SCARA robot selects the product and transfers it to the packaging. Full sensor monitoring is also included for product quality and material supply. The system is designed to be quickly adjusted to operate across five different packaging formats and product quantities.

Developed using a combination of different technologies, the system provides both consistency in the way product is handled, predictable productivity levels, and a minimum of operator intervention.

Value Proposition:

Expected benefits to the client include:

  • 4 operators per shift saved
  • Potential payback of 2 years
  • 25% increase in product production due to reduced down time and increased efficiency

As a small Island of automation this system will operate on its own, but over time will be linked to other processes both downstream and upstream as part of a cohesive automation strategy.

Based in Chard, Somerset, CME Limited offers both bespoke, and a growing range of standard packaging and automation solutions, for the Pharmaceutical, Cannabis, Tobacco, Food and Consumer Goods sectors around the world.
